Pop Colors and Collaboration Give Photographer Melissa O'Hearn Her Signature Style

Known for her arresting advertising and editorial photography (as seen in Playboy and The Wall Street Journal), Seattle-based photographer Melissa O'Hearn is happiest when she's on set experimenting with colleagues and color. We sat down with Melissa recently to see how she feeds her creativity on and off set.

Q. Where do you get your luminous sense of color?

A. Good (difficult) question. I’m not entirely sure, maybe from my love for glam rock growing up? In all seriousness, color is so fun to play with. I love the simplicity of monochromatic sets and the energy of poppy, contrasting colors. It’s always fun to set the mood with color.

Q. What inspiration do you draw on for your work whether it’s from popular culture, favorite photographers or your education?

A. I’m always on Instagram, going down rabbit holes there and finding interesting images. I love Jess Marble and Cass Bird for fashion and Alessandro Kongo and Mitchell Feinberg for still-life work. And of course, @tasteofstreep for laughs.A. Good (difficult) question. I’m not entirely sure, maybe from my love for glam rock growing up? In all seriousness, color is so fun to play with. Q. What’s your secret to keeping with the times while keeping your images timeless?

A. Oh geez, are there are timeless images? Guy Bourdian, actually, comes to mind. I like quirk, I like color, I guess both of these can stand the test if time. They never get old!

Q. Any current obsessions in your work?

A. Yes! I’m learning video! I’ve been obsessed with stop motion and the next logical step is video. Excited for this next chapter in my work!
